Join us for our next Melrose Promenade Advisory Committee meeting!
We are officially kicking off our community visioning process by meeting with our consultants, the team of the Berger Partnership, Weinstein AU, and Schemata Workshop this Wednesday, December 12.
At 5pm, we will meet in front of Bauhaus at Melrose and Pine and proceed to walk the length of the Promenade looking for inspiration. And, at 6pm will be our regular advisory committee meeting at the Capitol Hill Library (425 Harvard Avenue East).
Over the next several months, our consultants will be working with us to lead a series of public meetings to further develop our vision for all that the Melrose Promenade can one day be, and they will be joining us for the walk and our meeting.
In addition, at the meeting we will also be discussing our applications to Opportunity Fund and the Neighborhood Street Fund grant programs. Hope to see you then!
What do you think the future Melrose Promenade might look like?

For instance, how would we like to see Bellevue Place Park used in the future? Would we like to see a p-patch under the trees along the bicycle trail? Would we like to have a plaza at the Denny Way intersection, as was illustrated in one of the images?

Melrose Promenade – the Front Porch to Capitol Hill
We are about to embark on our community visioning process and are currently seeking a consultant with expertise in planning, urban design, and/or landscape architecture to lead a series of three public meetings, develop draft concepts for the Melrose corridor, coordinate with members of the public, and produce a plan that outlines the
community’s vision for the corridor.
Our community visioning process was made possible by the City of Seattle’s Neighborhood Matching Fund program, which awarded a $20,000 grant to Central Seattle Greenways and the Melrose Promenade Advisory Committee for this project. The budget for the consultants’ work is $13,200.

What’s a better backdrop for a reading by some of Seattle’s most talented writers than the Space Needle, the Olympic Mountains, and the setting sun?

We’re excited to announce that Bellwether Housing and Stewardship Partners are officially on board with the Melrose Promenade project.
Bellwether Housing is an affordable housing developer headquartered at the corner of Bellevue Avenue and Olive Way, just a block east of Melrose.On its website, Bellwether says: “Bellwether meets the need for affordable rents by buying, building and managing apartments in urban locations.” And, it adds: “Commitment to social justice and environmental sustainability are evident in all our efforts.”
Stewardship Partners is non-profit organization that helps private landowners restore and preserve the natural landscapes of Washington State. Stewardship Partners will be working with us to pursue green storm water solutions that could become a part of the Promenade.
On its website, Stewardship Partners says: “We collaborate with diverse interest groups to build bridges and find solutions that achieve mutual goals of environmental protection, economic health, and community well being. Our projects restore fish and wildlife habitat, improve water quality, protect open space, and “green up” the built environment while maintaining working landscapes of farms, forestland, and livable communities throughout the State.”

Are you looking to get more involved in the Melrose Promenade project? Are you interested in community engagement, planning, design, or fundraising? Then next Wednesday’s meeting is just the place for you!
We will be holding a working group session next Wednesday, Aug. 22, at 6pm in the Capitol Hill Library (425 Harvard Avenue East). Our working groups will be focused on two tasks:
– Preparing a Request for Qualifications for a consultant to manage the community engagement, planning, and design process as part of the Melrose Promenade’s $20,000 Neighborhood Matching Fund Grant, and
– Discussing the contents of the Melrose Promenade’s Opportunity Fund application, which will be due September 17. We will likely be seeking $750,000 through this grant opportunity to fund development of parks and green space improvements.

Feet First has been advocating for walkable communities in Washington State for more than a decade. In their letter of support, Executive Director Lisa Quinn wrote, “The Melrose Promenade project supports our vision of how people are provided easy and safe ways to walk for their health, transportation, environment, community and pleasure.”
Later, she added, “The Melrose Promenade works towards the City of Seattle’s vision of becoming the most walkable city in the nation.”
Victrola Coffee serves coffee at two locations on Capitol Hill, on 15th Avenue East and East Pike Street, just steps from Melrose Avenue. Victrola has graciously donated of coffee for our Muffins on Melrose and Community Cleanup events.
Newmark Realty Capital is a property owner on Bellevue Avenue East, just one block east of Melrose. Newmark’s Skip Slavin wrote that the Promenade would be a “great public benefit”.

Friday, August 3 (8 – 9:30am) – Muffins on Melrose – Come get free muffins, free coffee, and other goodies! We’ll be set up at the corner of Melrose and Denny from 8am – 9:30am. Come learn about the Melrose Promenade project and share your thoughts on how to build an incredible new public open space on Melrose Avenue.
Tuesday, August 7 (6 – 9pm) – Melrose Promenade BBQ Potluck – As part of Seattle Night Out, we are throwing a street party on Melrose Avenue East at the foot of the East Republican Street stairs. Bring your Weber grills, your bratwursts, your veggie patties, some tunes, and more!
Wednesday, August 8 (6 – 7:30pm) – Melrose Promenade Advisory Committee – Want to play an active role in helping to plan, advocate for, and build the Promenade? Join us at the Capitol Hill Library (425 Harvard Avenue East) for our monthly Advisory Committee meeting, where we will report on our outreach activities, fundraising, planning and design work. Advisory Committee meetings are open to the general public.
